The Enemy: Cancer

Cancer: a real bitch.
Sorry - I'm not sorry.
It is the ultimate enemy. Quietly lethal, it does not discriminate and attacks with a vengeance and without warning. It is ugly, and the only way to treat it is with more ugliness. The most common treatments are poisonous and promise their own batch of unfriendly side-effects and complications. I really have nothing nice to say about cancer.

On Tuesday, November 16, 2010 I found out my Dad has cancer. Again.
He has been cancer-free for 24 years. But it's back.
He had Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma before, and has it again, but this time its a different kind . It's B-cell, Diffused Large Cell, Type B, Stage blah blah blah...

It's aggressive. The doctors say, however, even though it is aggressive and can metastasize (one of the many fun words I now have in my vocabulary - it means 'oh shit! the cancer has spread') quickly - it is usually very responsive to treatment. We are waiting to find out if it has metastasized and if his heart can handle all the treatments. He has his first round of chemo starting tomorrow - 11/29. If it is too far along, or if he doesn't respond to the chemo other options include stem cell transplant or bone marrow transplant. If it gets to that point - he would need a donor, usually siblings are the best match - thankfully he has 9, so chances are pretty good he could find a match. But lets not get ahead of ourselves. We are hoping a few rounds of chemo is all it takes to get rid of this bitch!

Deciding whether to blog about this was a struggle.
3 reasons why I am:
1. I need an outlet.
2. I am terrified and I think it might help me organize all of it and help it make a bit more sense.
3. You can never have to many people praying - so please pray.

To the cancer: Please leave as quickly and quietly as you came. Thanks.
And to the few people that might be reading this, two things:
1. Please pray for my Dad, and my family. Strenght, grace and patience.
2. Take a moment to truely appreciate your family and friends.

Cheers & Happy Holidays
